Dawn Butler MP, Labour’s Shadow Equalities Secretary, responding to the rise in domestic violence linked to coronavirus, said:
“The rise in domestic violence figures are shocking – the government cannot ignore this any longer. Women’s lives are in danger and it can’t be left to cash-strapped refuges and charities alone to support them.
“We have raised this issue several times and need an urgent response now. The government must act fast to protect vulnerable women and introduce emergency measures to address domestic violence during the coronavirus crisis. Refuge centres must be properly funded and access to specialist services should be available round the clock for those suffering.
“For those living with an abusive person this is a terrifying time and we must do everything we can to support victims.”
