Luton Council is facing a devastating shortfall of £49m in its finances as a result of COVID-19. Money the Council usually receives from the Airport, from a per passenger fee, which is used to fund front-line services has almost dried up overnight.
So far the government’s COVID-19 funding for councils only represents a drop in the ocean. The government promised “whatever is necessary” to support councils financially and Robert Jenrick MP has assured me that MHCLG are working closely with Luton Council. Urgent action is needed to protect vital services in Luton.
