Jo Stevens responds the Government pledge to rescue rugby league

Jo Stevens MP, Labour’s Shadow Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, responding to the Government pledging £16m to rescue rugby League, said:

“Rugby league clubs are right at the heart of their communities and Labour MPs have been pushing for the Government to step in, so this support is a welcome move.

“But with many clubs in a precarious financial position, highly dependent on TV and gate revenues, this support inevitably won’t be enough. Asking clubs to take on significant new debt further risks their safety into the future.

“The Government needs to keep this support under review, listen to the clubs and the Rugby Football League to ensure the survival of this vital community sport.“
